Kootu Curry

This kootu kari /curry is made with black chickpeas and vegetables. Yam/suran, unripe plantain are used as the vegetables, but i have made with just yam and black chickpeas. Coconut ground with other ingredients makes a good gravy and adds to the taste of this curry.

Ingredients

2 cups - Black chickpeas / Kadala / kala chana, cooked
1 cup - Yam / Suran, chopped
Salt to taste

Dry roast

1/2 tsp - Red chili powder
1/2 tsp - Turmeric powder

Grind to paste

1 cup - Grated Coconut , dry roast to light brown colour
1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds / jeera
2 - Shallots / small onions

Seasoning

1 tsp - Mustard seeds
2 - Dry whole red chili
2 sprigs - Curry leaves

Method

1 ) Cook suran in water with roasted red chili and turmeric powder. The vegetable should very well cooked. Add cooked kadala and salt to taste.

2 ) Add the ground coconut mixture, mix with the cooked vegetable and kadala. Add enough water for gravy and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

3 ) Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and pop it. Then add dry chili and curry leaves. Season the kootu curry with this.

Serve hot with rice. This will make a good addition to Onam sadhya.

Where can I get black chickpeas??? Can I use the normal ones? This sounds great and if I had a plantain I would try it now.

We are making Raj Ma beans and not sure what else next.

Also do you have any ideas on what Indian food to feed young kids.. I have tried dal and he does not seem to like it but he loves all other kinds of beans.

Thank you...I will link up soon.

Hi pecos : Black chickpeas is available in Indian stores. Look out for the name kala chana.
You will have to soak this chickpeas in water overnight and then pressure cook or cook in enough water till the chickpea is soft.
Normal one..i hope you mean..garbanzo. Taste of garbanzo is a bit different from black chickpeas. I have not tried this recipe with garbanzo.
The yam i have used is indian yam. you can use mixed veggies like plaintain, carrot,potato...
Rajma is really a delicious and nutrious dish.
you could try kichidi for your young one. kichidi has rice, dal, vegetables all cooked together. Add some ghee /butter to it...my 2 year old likes it.
Do you cook indian dishes often ? I am so glad you are trying out my recipes :D

Hi Asha : Hey ..have you tried out any of my recipes? Traditional dishes are really yummy, inspite of it being all veggie :D

About twice a week. I am now just trying to vary up what I am making and I really like the flavors of Southern India..so different than what you would ever get in a resturant here. I will look for kala chana next time I am in Chicago.

Thank you.

This looks delicious; though our Kadal koottu is different; it is drier and shallots are not used.
