Ingredients
1 cup - Dried small shrimps
8 to 10 - Dried whole red chilies
1/2 cup - Freshly grated coconut
5 flakes - Garlic
small piece - Ginger
A small marble size - Seedless tamarind
2 sprigs - Curry leaves
Salt to taste
Method
1 ) Heat a pan with little coconut oil, add dried shrimps, red chilies and on a low flame fry, taking care not to burn the ingredients till the shrimps are fried and cooked in that low flame. Take off the stove and cool.
2 ) Add to a blender / grinder, the fried ingredients, run the blender and powder the shrimp and chilies. Then add garlic, ginger, curry leaves, tamarind, coconut and salt to taste. Run the blender and grind all the ingredients well to a coarse mixture.
Serve as a side dish with kanji or rice.

Ohhhhhh i am drooling here. When i was still living at home we used to have this sometimes with hot kanji. Just the thouguth make me home sick.

This is one of my all time favourite .Love this chammathy with kanji ..In our place we never used tamarind with prawns..hmm have to try this version also ...last week i tried to make this delicious chammanthy seeing mishmash`s post, and stopped in the beginning itself ....I did nt get the roasted prawns and u can just imagine the smell while roasting ,tht too in a flat in dubai ...!! My 4 year old son was saying ayyee ayyee... :(

quite uniue dish with shrimps.....so u used the small indian veriety shrimp....?
Chemmeen Chammanthi looks really good. Time permitting I still use my granite motor and pestle to make them. In my opinion, something about using these tools make the dish taste even better. Like veena said we also don't use tamarind with the chemeen chammanthi. Have to try your version.
